One Pill a Day Can Protect You from HIV
PrEP is a once-daily pill for people who do not have HIV to protect against becoming infected. Due in part to support from Gilead Sciences, Inc., Thrive Alabama is home to North Alabama’s only PrEP Clinic. PrEP, or Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, when taken consistently, prevents HIV from establishing itself in the body if exposed to the virus. The pill may be used by individuals who are at high risk for acquiring HIV as defined by Center for Disease Control (CDC). Typical high risk behaviors include: having multiple sex partners, inconsistently using condoms, being involved in a relationship with someone who has HIV/AIDS, and sharing drug injection equipment.
