PrEP FAQ

How do I pay for PrEP?
PrEP is covered by insurance, Medicaid and Medicare, and payment assistance programs are available to assist with co-payments.
Is PrEP for me?
PrEP is for anyone who is HIV negative and concerned about their risk for HIV infection. This can include people who have multiple sex partners, use condoms inconsistently, have sex with someone who is HIV-positive, or share drug needles with others. It is also beneficial for those who frequently get STIs or who exchange sex for money, housing, or other needs.
Do I still need condoms?
PrEP does not replace the need for condom use, since it does not prevent other sexually-transmitted infections or prevent pregnancy.
Are there side effects?
Side effects can include headache, nausea, or weight loss. More serious side effects can include liver or kidney problems, but patients who are on PrEP will be tested every three months for proper liver and kidney function.
How long do I take PrEP?

Take PrEP as long as you are at risk for contracting HIV — for the duration of a relationship or for a lifetime.

Should you decide to stop PrEP, consult the clinic as PrEP should be continued for 30 days after the last potential exposure to HIV. When starting PrEP, it takes 7 to 21 days to reach maximum effectiveness.

How does PrEP work?
PrEP works by preventing HIV from making more copies of itself in the body. You will remain HIV negative if the virus can’t make enough copies of itself in your system.
